AFCON 2023: Congolese react to their dream evening – At a glance

DR Congo are in the semi-finals of AFCON 2023. The Leopards beat Guinea 3-1 on Friday, February 1, in a controlled encounter.Following the win, the Congolese reacted in the mixed zone to Sport News Africa. Arthur Masuaku, who scored the 3-1 winner with a splendid free-kick, explained his inspiration.“On the free-kick, I saw the goalkeeper a bit advanced, so I took a shot and it worked (…) We want to go all the way.We want to do it for ourselves, for our families. Cédric Bakambu also expressed his delight. “We’re happy, there’s qualification at the end of the day. The most important thing about this CAN is not my personal situation. It’s not that Bakambu didn’t score, it’s that the DRC won.”

Yoane Wissa, scorer of Congo’s second goal, reflects on his penalty: “It was a tough game, but we managed to make the difference. It came down to a few things. On the penalty kick, the only thing that mattered was scoring. It was for our history. The architect of this team, coach Sébastien Desabre, commented: “We took an early goal.We had to react and not panic. We regained control and it came down to set-pieces (…) Our objective now is to reach the final. That’s normal. We’ve got a few days’ rest to recover before getting back out on the pitch to continue our story. This group wants to do great things.

In the semi-final, Masuaku’s team-mates will meet the winner of Mali-Côte d’Ivoire, which takes place this Saturday, February 03 at 17:00 GMT.
