The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has announced that a team of 18 athletes will take part in the World Athletics Championship 2022 in Eugene, Oregon in the United States.
Dominic Otuchet, President of the Federation told Sports News Africa on Wednesday that they have a strong team that will tussle it out at the Championship slated for July 15-2th.
He says double Olympic medalist Joshua Cheptegei together with other stars who have performed well in the last two years will lead the team.
In 2019 Cheptegei won gold in the 10,000m at the IAAF World Championship in Doha, Qatar. He is also the reigning Olympic champion in the 5000 metres and silver medalist for the 10,000 metres and World Cross Country champion.
Peruth Chemutai, a gold medalist in 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2020 Summer Olympics and Stella Chesang, winner of a gold medal in 10,000m at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia are also part of the team.
Otuchet says the athletes have prepared well and competed in several International meets in order to stay in shape. “We are confident we shall win several medals at the Championship,” added Otuchet.
Women: Immaculate Chemutai (Marathon), Stella Chesang, Mercycline Chelangat (10,000m), Ester Chebet (5,000m), Peruth Chemutai (3000m Steeplechase), Winnie Nanyondo (1,500m), Halimah Nakaayi (800m), Sheda Leni (400m)
Men: Felix Chemonges, Fred Musobo, Jackson Kiprop (Marathon), Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo, Stephen Kissa (10,000m), Peter Maru, Oscar Chelimo (5,000m), Ronald Musagala (1,500m), Tartis Orogot (200m)
