Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat has started the 2022 season in style by winning the Gent Half Marathon on Sunday.

He beat a strong field of runners to record a time of 1:00:11 in the Half Marathon that took place in Belgium.

“I am excited to win this Half Marathon as I prepare for the Commonwealth Games,” said Kiplangat.

Kenya’s Evans Mayaka finished second with a time of 1:01:02. Two other Kenyan runners Josphat Kipchirchir and Nicolas Chelule finished in third and fourth places respectively.

England’s Emile Caireless recorded a time of 1:01:16 to finish fifth, while Djibouti also had Abdi Djamal and Hassan Wais Rayaley finish in ninth and tenth positions respectively.

Dominic Otichet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told Sport News Africa that he is happy with Kiplangat’s good performance in his first race at international level this season.

“We are working hard this year to see that we win as many medals as possible at the Commonwealth Games. These International Championships are good to prepare our athletes ahead of the Commonwealth games,” added Otuchet.

At the 2018 Commonwealth games held in Gold Coast, Australia, Uganda won three gold medals, one silver and two bronze.
